"Dirt Diver" Drops in for a Quick Chat

 MORE MAX MINUTES!

YOU GOT THEM!

By Becca Bryan and Max Martini

You read that right. After the long wait for a new interview, Max Martini, aka “Mack Gerhardt” is back to talk to The HQ about the new season for The Unit. His call came late in the evening, Eastern time, as he was on a break from night shooting out in the middle of no where. Sounding a bit tired, he was still the same Max we love, and the one person who binds the fan base together-male, female, civilian and military. We gave him the opportunity to “interview the interviewer”, but admit that we kind of threw it at him at the last minute. Always the fun loving good sport, he started it off.

Max: What do the fans think of the direction the show is going this season?
HQ: It’s really a crap shoot, Max. We’ve only read script snippets, seen a few spoiler clips. So we’re just waiting to see where the show takes us. You know, one of the fans’ complaints is the lack on continuity between seasons in the stories and back stories. We really want and need that continuity. Are we going to get it?
Max: You’re getting it this season. The Mack, Tiffy, Ryan triangle is being dealt with. Then it gets put on the back burner for a while. Then it’s back on!
HQ: I have to know. Will Tiffy and Mack ever reconcile and get back together?
Max: They don’t tell me anything! They haven’t since the first season. I have to wait for the script! What do the fans think of the new timeslot? We’ve been talking and think that football could push it to the next week if it runs over.
HQ: It’s 50/50 on the new time slot, from what I’ve read. First of all, Sunday night is the most watched night on TV. It’s at 10 PM. The kids are in bed, the chores are done and the adults are relaxing by watching some adult TV. This could really open the door for some grittier more sexy Unit! True, football could bump it to next week. But we just have to deal with that. The others, who were loyal to the Tuesday nights at 9 slot, want it back. That was their night for TV. They think the show will bomb on Sundays. I don’t think it will. Your core fan base never left and will return. We just have to reach all the others and keep reminding them that it’s on Sunday now. CBS could certainly help with that a little more. So Max, we all saw the pictures on your website (www.maxmartini.com) of the recent USO Tour and just fell deeper into love and loyalty to you all. What was it like for you?
Max: The people there were not star struck. It was more like they were “thank you for giving us something to watch so we can escape the everyday reality here.” They love us and they love the show! We made some beautiful friendships over there. I still communicate with some of the soldiers I met.
HQ: About Season 4, the long awaited new season: what’s in store for us? Just a little hint?
Max: I can tell you this: Episodes 7 and 8 is a two parter. It’s one big mission, a MONSTER of a mission. The mother of all missions!!!!!!
HQ: Great! We love two part shows! Don’t tell us anything else! So how was your time when you guest starred on Burn Notice? That’s pretty close to where I live.
Max: It is???? It was a blast! I loved it. Had a good time. When I had some time off, I ran down the beach and into the ocean! Just loved it!
HQ: You’re such a tourist! Any other projects on your plate other than The Unit?
Max: My brother Chris is directing a movie he wrote. It’s called Troopers. I executive produce and star in it. It’s about two brothers, both of them in Iraq in combat. One gets sent home on medical leave and the other stays. It’s about their relationship. One of them has some demons to deal with. It shoots in LA in November. I’m going to do that in between my work on the show.
HQ: Can’t wait to see that one! Anything else you want to tell the fans?
Max: Tell everyone I said hi! We’ve been busy shooting since we got back. We’re on episode seven now. But let them know I said hi and thanks for watching!
Watch we did. Sunday, Sept 28 The Unit premiered with a respectable 9.5 million viewers.  The various online forums were lit up within minutes of the closing credits and continued to be active with viewer comments throught the next day.  If these numbers keep up, we still have over 20 more Max filled episodes. Life is good.
